Warez is used to describe any illegal software. . Warez surely is a phenomenon; over 50 % of all installed programs on personal computers are warez.

Why do people use warez?

It’s free as in beer. Warez application does not restrict user registration and product key.

Why is the use of warez a bad idea?

It is very naive to think that if someone is capable of breaking software protection, she cannot add a Trojan horse or backdoor code into the application. This code
provides an attacker with the access to your computer. Yes, it is possible and actually it is happening quite often. Hackers use this technique to build botnets. Botnets are networks of infected PCs that are used to obtain personal data, send spam and participate in DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks. Your sensitive data (access to your Internet banking, email, etc.) may be compromised of your computer may be used for illegal activities. For example, your ISP may call you and tell you: “your PC is used to spread spam so you are going to be disconnected”.

What are the effects of warez on the future of commercial software?

Warez is one of the reasons why companies prefer the “applications as a service” sales model. A major emerging trend is cloud computing. This is logical: application is running remotely and is difficult to steal and give away as warez.

What are the alternatives to using warez?

- Buying the original software,
- using online applications (software as a service), or
- using open source applications.

There are plenty of options and there is no reason to use warez. Your computer and your data will be safe. If you are doing standard work on PC and you do not need any special software, try Linux (e. g. Ubuntu). It needs to get accustomed to, but maybe you will be surprised how comfortable the use of this OS is.
